Keeping GoodSync up to date ensures that you have the latest application improvements, fixes, and compatibility updates.
This guide explains how to update GoodSync, manually check for new versions, control automatic update settings, protect your Job configuration before an update, and troubleshoot license or activation issues that may occur afterward.
Before Updating GoodSync
Before installing an update, we recommend saving a copy of your GoodSync Jobs. This provides a backup of your Job configuration in case it is needed later.
Windows:
Open GoodSync and select Tools > Export All Jobs.
macOS:
Open GoodSync and select GoodSync > Export All Jobs.
Save the exported .tix file in a safe location that will remain accessible if GoodSync needs to be reinstalled.
For complete instructions, see How can I export/import my jobs?
Important: If any Jobs are currently running, allow them to finish or stop them before starting the GoodSync update.
Install an Update From the Yellow Notification Banner
When GoodSync detects that a newer version is available, a yellow notification banner may appear across the top of the GoodSync application.
To begin the update, click Click here to install it.
GoodSync must fully stop while the new version is being installed. This allows the installer to replace the currently installed GoodSync program files.
After the installation completes, reopen GoodSync if it does not reopen automatically.
Confirm that your Jobs are present and that GoodSync is operating normally before allowing automatic Jobs or schedules to resume.
Manually Check for GoodSync Updates
You can manually check whether a newer GoodSync version is available.
In GoodSync, select:
Help > Check for Updates
GoodSync will check whether a newer version is available for the installed application.
If a newer version has been deployed by GoodSync and the installed version is older, GoodSync will provide the option to install the update.
If the currently installed version is already up to date, no newer version will be offered.
Automatic GoodSync Update Options
GoodSync can automatically check for newly available versions and can also automatically install an update when one is found.
In GoodSync for Windows, open:
Tools > Program Options > Auto
Under the Updates section, the following options are available:
- Check for a new version daily - GoodSync automatically checks for newly available versions.
- Auto Install new version when found - GoodSync can automatically install a new version after it is detected.
These options can be disabled if you prefer to control when GoodSync checks for or installs application updates.
For additional information about these settings, see: GoodSync Auto Program Options
If GoodSync Is No Longer Activated After an Update
If GoodSync reports an activation or license issue after an update, first confirm that the installed GoodSync platform matches the license assigned to the device.
Open:
Help > About
Locate the Lic= information in the About window.
The Lic= entry identifies the license or platform currently recognized by the installed GoodSync application.
GoodSync Personal, Workstation, and Server use different licensing platforms. The installed GoodSync platform must match the license assigned to the device.
You can review the expected platform and license combinations here: GoodSync Account License Understanding
If the installed platform does not match the purchased license, install the correct GoodSync version before continuing with additional activation troubleshooting.
Sign In to Your GoodSync Account
If the correct GoodSync platform is installed but the activation issue persists, sign in to your GoodSync Account and review the assigned devices and licenses.
You can sign in directly at: GoodSync Account Login
You can also access your GoodSync Account directly from GoodSync for Windows:
Tools > Account Manage
Step 1: Review Assigned Licenses
- Open the Licenses section of your GoodSync Account.
- Review the devices listed under Assigned Device Licenses.
- If a license is assigned to a device that is no longer being used, click UnAssign next to that device.
The license will return to Available Device Licenses so it can be assigned again.
Use UnAssign when you only want to release a license from a device. Do not use Delete under Available Device Licenses for this purpose.
Step 2: Remove Old or Duplicate Devices
Next, open the Devices section of your GoodSync Account.
Remove device entries that are no longer needed, including:
- The device whose license was just unassigned.
- Old devices that are no longer being used.
- Duplicate entries for the same device.
Click Delete next to each device entry you want to remove.
Important: If a license is still assigned to a device you want to remove, return to the Licenses section and UnAssign the license first.
Note: Deleting a device from the GoodSync Account Devices list does not delete the existing GoodSync Jobs or program settings stored locally on that computer.
Automatic Device Cleanup
GoodSync also provides the account setting: Delete Devices that did not appear for this many days.
This setting automatically removes inactive device entries that have not communicated with GoodSync services for the configured number of days. The default value is 180 days.
If you prefer to clean inactive device entries from the account sooner, the value can be lowered, such as to 30 days.
Step 3: Run Account Setup Again
After old or duplicate device entries have been cleaned up, return to the device you want to activate and run GoodSync Account Setup again.
Windows
Open GoodSync and select:
Tools > Account Setup
macOS
Open GoodSync and select:
GoodSync > Account Setup
Sign in using the GoodSync Account associated with the applicable license and complete the Account Setup process.
Step 4: Confirm the Device Is Activated
After Account Setup completes, return to your GoodSync Account.
- Open Licenses.
- Locate Assigned Device Licenses.
- Confirm that the newly activated device appears in the list.
- Open Devices and confirm that the Platform and Licenses values match.
